Black Farmers to Applaud $4B in Debt Relief in Stimulus Bill

$4 billion in direct debt relief for Black farmers and other farmers of color.

At 1:30PM EST on Monday, March 8, a group of Black farmers from across the country will hold a briefing to discuss the historic action taken over the weekend when the U.S. Senate passed the $1.9 trillion Covid-19 stimulus legislation that includes $4 billion in direct debt relief for Black farmers and other farmers of color.

The call will be hosted by the Black Belt Justice Center and will be moderated by the group’s Executive Director and Co-Organizer of the Cancel Pigford Debt Campaign, Tracy Lloyd McCurty, Esq., and Lawrence Lucas, President Emeritus of the USDA Coalition of Minority Employees.

The following farmers will each deliver short remarks and will then take questions from the press:

  • Bernice Atchison, Farmer from Chilton County, Alabama and Pigford Historian
  • Bernard Bates, Farmer from Hill City, Kansas
  • Carolyn Jones, Farmer and Executive Director for Mississippi Minority Farmers Alliance
  • Anthony Sigue, Sugarcane Farmer from Iberia Parish, Louisiana
  • Eddie Slaughter, Farmer from Buena Vista, Georgia
  • Lloyd Wright, Farmer from Westmoreland County, Virginia and Former Director of the USDA Civil Rights Office
