Hip-hop impresario and business mogul Russell Simmons’ Global Grind entertainment webzine will cover the Sol Afrik Fashion Week New York (SAFWNY) launch party on Thursday, July 19.

This fashion networking soiree brings together trendsetters and taste makers from across the diaspora in celebration of Sol Afrik’s much-anticipated debut this September.

“Sol Afrik Fashion Week is the only fashion week that focuses on the artistry of people of color from across the Diaspora,” said Simmons, founder of the iconic Phat Farm “sporty urban” fashion line. “This is the time for us to create our own international platform in the fashion industry, where we can be carefully nurtured and properly showcased in a manner that is world-class while still meeting the industry standard.”

Sol Afrik Fashion Week New York (Sept. 21-28) is a lavish, multi-day fashion event – the first of its kind to exclusively showcase edgy, couture, contemporary, and ready-to-wear fashions created by designers hailing from across the African diaspora and the globe.  The event features two days of spectacular runway shows, an emerging designer showcase, as well as an exhibition hall that affords designers a chance to hobnob with industry insiders: from buyers onto merchandising and production chain reps.

“Sol Afrik Fashion Week was created to give those designers who have been traditionally under-represented and marginalized a place to affordably showcase their designs,” said SAFWNY Executive Director Kantaki Washington. “This is a one-of-a-kind platform to trademark their original designs and exquisite aesthetic in an unprecedented way.

From African-Americans and continental Africans, to designers of color in the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, and Asia; Sol Afrik’s international approach creates a unique opportunity that is sure to gain them unprecedented exposure.

“It’s important to represent an under-represented population,” said Hollywood actor and Sol Afrik blog cover story Gbenga Akinnagbe. “A lot of fashion comes from the Black and Brown demographics, but sadly becomes financially appropriated by the mainstream.”

Recognizing the importance of this groundbreaking event, NY Governor Andrew Cuomo and the NY State Senate passed a resolution declaring September 21-20, 2012 Sol Afrik Fashion Week.

Russell Simmons, said, “I urge designers of color to take advantage of this amazing opportunity that Sol Afrik has created as an excellent space for designers to showcase their talent.”

The launch party is from 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm at Brooklyn Terrace – 216-228 Duffield Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201.
