The UpState New York Black Chamber of Commerce is building an ecosystem of resources and programs to help members and entrepreneurs get into New York’s multibillion-dollar recreational cannabis industry.

CEO Anthony Gaddy said it will be critical to engage people in communities that have historically faced the worst consequences from the war on drugs, and have been excluded from other states’ legal marijuana industries.

“In New York state, half of the adult-use cannabis licenses are supposed to be set aside for economic equity applicants, and most of the public conversation — at least from what we’ve seen — has been led by non-people of color,” Gaddy said. “It’s important we make sure the conversation is also equitable.”

When New York passed the adult-use marijuana bill this spring, it opened an opportunity for a multibillion-dollar industry that could create anywhere from 30,000 to 60,000 new jobs.
