WBAI radio under the leadership of new Interim General Manager, Robert Scott Adams, the non-commercial radio station will host its annual spring on air-fund raising drive to raise $1 million.

The theme for the ambitious drive is “Debunking the Myth.  The radio station that once boasted a large audience that held its own against the leading talk shows in New York, now has only about 300,000 listeners.  In radio terms, especially in the metropolitan area that number is considered relatively low, especially for a station that depends on listeners to survive.

“We’re trying to increase our audience and our appeal and at the same time stay true to the stations mission, says Adams.  “As a listener supported station that accepts no corporate underwriting it is essential for us to provide programming the audience feels is important enough to support with their generous contributions. We want to continue to be the progressive voice of the community.

Adds Adams: “We depend on these drives to operate.  Our average audience is 53 years old.  We need to have more interaction talk with different views and we are looking at modifying some shows that will do that.  Talk Back is one of the more popular shows we have because the audience can call in.  My goal is to get more people to listen, if more people hear about us I know we can have a larger audience.  We’re looking at doing total overall of programming and that’s going to take sometime.

The drive will begin on Monday, May 7, through May 27 2007.  Listeners can tune in to hear a variety of topics such as; why has the Bush Administration ignored global warming; policy concerns of the 21st Century; Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and the research findings of thousands of scientists;  who really killed Malcolm X?;  does the regulation of media control actually lead to a better democracy?; who is really the guilty party in 9-11?; and, other important topics affecting our lives today.

“With each question we will challenge popularly held, as well, as institutionally promoted beliefs calling upon independent journalists, scholars and investigators to help in ‘Debunking the Myth,’ adds Programming Director, Bernard White.

If you have not tuned in to WBAI in awhile, set the dial to 99.5FM and welcome them back.  Listeners can pledge either online, (www.wbai.org,) or during the drive by calling 212-209-2950 beginning May 7 at 6am.
