The family of Ronald Anthony Smith, who was killed by NYPD officers in April on a Brooklyn street, will meet with the CCRB on Mon 11/14. They will hold a media availability after the meeting to call on the CCRB, Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell to fire the officers who recklessly drove a NYPD van down a median, hit and killed Smith, and continued driving for 35 feet with him on the hood.

The press conference will be held at 100 Church Street (in front of CCRB office) on Monday November 14th at 3:30pm.

The Smith family is calling on CCRB to act in earnest after viewing footage at the NYS Attorney General’s Office (which is conducting the criminal investigation) that constitutes clear evidence that NYPD Officers Orkhan Mamedov and Eval Siegel must be fired and prosecuted immediately.

Among the speakers will be:

Julie Floyd, sister of Ronald Anthony Smith

Loyda Colon, Justice Committee

David Rankin, Beldock, Levine & Hoffman, LLP

BACKGROUND:

On April 7, 2022 Ronald Anthony Smith was killed by NYPD Officers Orkhan Mamedov, who was operating the vehicle, and Eval Siegel, as they recklessly drove an NYPD van down a median in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, struck Mr. Smith and then dragged his body another 35 feet on the hood.

In July, Anthony’s family viewed a video of the incident at the office of Attorney General Letitia James, who is conducting a criminal investigation into Anthony’s death. The footage clearly shows Officers Mamedov and Siegel driving recklessly through the median without any regard to Smith, anyone else in the road, or those in custody who were passengers in the van.

The Smith family is calling on the Civilian Complaint Review Board to complete its investigation with urgency and bring fireable charges against both officers. They are also calling on Mayor Adams and Commissioner Sewell to fire the officers and on Attorney General James to criminally prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.
