Anti-poverty agency FPWA is pushing for more COVID-19 funding for New York.

According to a leading poverty-fighting agency FPWA, Congress took a meaningful step Thursday by passing the nearly $500 billion Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act. The Act will largely assist in keeping some New Yorkers working, businesses open, and nonprofits and their essential services running. The remaining funds appropriated for health care providers and for testing are vital to address the public health crisis.

FPWA released the following statement:

We stand alongside our New York City congressional delegation in our commitment to serve New Yorkers during this crisis. We strongly urge them, however, to swiftly and substantially build on the funding to New York State included in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The extent and duration of public health measures required to control the spread of COVID-19 is uncertain, but the resulting deep and unequal economic downturn is underway here in New York City.

We, and our coalition partners in the New York Federal Tax and Budget Response Team, have proposed a full range of policy recommendations to protect New York City and State’s fiscal solvency and ability to provide services, provide economic security to the millions of New York City residents alone who will suffer, further assist nonprofits working on the frontlines caring for their communities , adequately safeguard public health, and address the structural weaknesses in our economy now to lay the groundwork for a recovery in which everyone prospers.”
