Giving the CCRB independent power to police the police is one reform Charles and Inez Barron are advancing.

Councilmember Inez Barron and Assemblymember Charles Barron will hold a press conference on Monday, June 8, 2020, at 1 Police Plaza, New York, NY, at 2 P.M.

The conference will announce the submission of legislation in the New York City Council to replace the present Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) with an Elected Civilian Review Board, with the power to gather information, investigate, hold hearings and issue binding disciplinary actions.

The legislation will also establish an Independent Prosecutor with the power to conduct criminal cases against police officers who are charged with criminal offenses.

The current CCRB has not had the independence or authority to enforce appropriate consequences for police misconduct, use of excessive force, illegal search, abusive language and other misdeeds.

Others in attendance will include the New York Campaign for an Elected Civilian Review Board, Stop Police Violence Now, and community advocates. The growing movement to hold police accountable for their inappropriate behavior is also being undertaken in cities across the nation, including Rochester, NY and Chicago, IL.
