Labor Day: New York Politicos Vow To Fight More For Workers' Rights

A number of New York elected officials say even as the nation celebrates Labor Day there's a lot more that still needs to be done on behalf of workers who are hard pressed to earn enough to take care of their families.

"Labor Day affords us all an opportunity to reflect upon and honor hard working men and women who helped build the United States of America," said Melissa Mark-Viverito, the New York City Council Speaker, in a statement today. "At the same time, we must continue to push forward for workers in New York and across the country. Raising the minimum wage, fighting for reasonable working conditions in all industries, and protecting laborers from wage theft remain major issues in 2015. The New York City Council has been - and will continue to be - committed to fighting for these issues for all residents of New York City. I'd like to wish every New Yorker a safe and happy Labor Day."

"I am proud to stand with workers fighting for better wages, safer working conditions and critical benefits which strengthen the security and prosperity of all our citizens. Whether battling against wage theft, working to ensure more reliable scheduling or calling for a real, livable wage, I will continue to fight alongside New Yorkers for dignity, respect and fairness in the workplace.”
