The Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial & Education Center is pleased to announce details about its annual Malcolm X Day: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at 6:00 PM EST.

The night will feature performances and appearances by Ms. Lauryn Hill, Sonia Sanchez, Anthony Hamilton, Keyon Harrold, Maimouna Youssef, Ayanna Gregory, Alice Smith, Tobe Nwigwe, Imam Omar Suleiman, Jessica Care Moore, Sa-Roc, Phillip Agnew, and Nicole Ari Parker. Additional appearances will include Angelica Ross, Boris Kodjoe, Mara Brock Akil, Jason Reynolds, Ben Harper, Ndaba Mandela, Black Men Build, Black Women Radicals, Within Our Lifetime, Carla Cooke and many more.

“The legacy of Malcolm X continues to guide generations because truth endures all time. My father was an exemplar of morality, and was unwavering in his commitment to bringing about the human rights of all people across the globe,” said Shabazz Center Co-Chair Ilyasah Shabazz. “In celebrating Malcolm’s 96th birthday on May 19th, we will honor the best in ourselves, which continues to animate our calls for justice worldwide. I am grateful to carry forth the legacy of my father and mother, Dr. Betty Shabazz, as the Co-Chairperson of The Shabazz Center, a memorial, cultural, and educational institution that facilitates thought exchange around racial equity and building the capacity of our social movements.”

The Shabazz Center facilitates thought exchange around racial equity, justice, and cultural production in the spirit of Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz. Through both global and local outreach, educational and cultural programming, and engagement with the African Diaspora, The Shabazz Center is a generative, action-oriented community organization, committed to growing social movements that empower and prepare people for leadership in civil society.

The Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial & Education Center Co-Chairs include Ilyasah Shabazz and Julio Peterson. The Board of Trustees include Phillip Agnew, Curtis Archer, Lumumba Bandele, Larry S. Blackmon, S. Ken Jones, Esq., Akemi Kochiyama, Kamal Koraitem, Jodie Patterson and Dr. Robyn C. Spencer.
