A State of Emergency has been declared by NYC food pantries due to the effects of COVID-19.
There have been 16,780,000 unemployment claims during the coronavirus shut down. Nearly one-third of the food pantries in the City of New York and across the nation have closed down and there is a 60 percent increase in the need for volunteers. Volunteers are not donating there time due to fear of contracting the virus.
An estimated 1.4 billion dollars in additional resources is needed for the next six months for the nation.
Local Events, Galas and Charity functions have been shut down due to safety concerns. The demand for food assistance is rising at an extraordinary rate.
According to the Feeding America organization, One in nine people face hunger in America, including more than 11 million children.
Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, estimates that an additional 17.1 million people could face hunger in the next six months as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. School closures, rising unemployment and rising poverty due to quarantine and stay-at-home orders have impacted everyone, especially people already at risk of hunger.
