The NYPD has announced the department has directed special attention to be given to all mosque/house-of-worship locations citywide, according to police officials.

Critical Response Command (CRC) personnel have been assigned to extended tour coverage at certain mosque locations as the NYPD monitors the situation in Quebec, the officials reported.

Six people were fatally shot and eight injured after two gunmen opened fire on the Islamic Cultural Center of Quebec around 8 p.m.

The shooting took place just hours after President Trump 's executive order banning refugees and travelers  from seven majority-Muslim nations took effect, leading to mass protests over the weekend at airports and parks around the country.

Meanwhile, the attack over the weekend comes at a time when Canadian leaders announced refuge for immigrants fleeing terrorism and warfare in their countries.

“It is heart-wrenching to see such senseless violence,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement to reporters early Monday. “Diversity is our strength, and religious tolerance is a value that we, as Canadians, hold dear.”
