[Commentary]

Following the choke-hold killing of Eric Garner by one of several NYPD police officers who confronted him on July 17 –and incident captured on video by a bystander– former New York City Councilmember Charles Barron, who will join other elected officials, activist and community residents at 2pm on Staten Island, issued the following statement:

“This madness must stop! These low-life savages choked an unarmed Black man to death who was pleading with them to leave him alone. After getting Brother Eric Garner in their death grip, he told them over and over again that he couldn’t breathe. These dogs kept attacking until there was no life left in his body. In 1978 our beloved Brother Arthur Miller was choked to death by NYPD. I was a part of a movement led by Rev. Herbert Daughtry, and the Black United Front that demonstrated and succeeded in getting the choke hold outlawed. This choke hold is illegal. They must be brought to Justice. Enough is Enough! Black life is precious! We must protect ourselves! R.I.P. Brother Eric Garne! My condolences to the family”.
