An off duty NYPD officer was killed Wednesday night when the car she was a passenger in lost control and ran off the road on City Island Road and Park Drive in the Bronx.

The driver, who has not been identified, but works out of PSA 4 as a police sergeant, was rushed to Jacobi Hospital with serious injuries and burns to his legs, but was reported in stable condition.

Police responded to a 911 call around 11:45 p.m. of a vehicle collision involving a single, overturned vehicle, which was on fire on City Island Road at Park Drive (City Island Circle), within the confines of the 45 Precinct. Upon arrival, officers observed a 32-year-old male with trauma and burns to both legs and an unidentified adult female, unconscious and unresponsive, with severe burns.

Witnesses at the scene stated the driver was pulled from the wreckage by other off-duty NYPD officers who were driving home from the Rodman’s Neck shooting range in the Bronx. It was not clear if the officers were responding to the call or happen along the scene.

The passenger was later identified as 27-year-old rookie Officer Bianca Bennett of Queens. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

NYPD’s Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined the vehicle, a 2012 Dodge Charger, was traveling at the location when it overturned and caught fire. There were no other vehicles involved in the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
