On Thursday afternoon, the NYPD officer who admitted to breaking into a Black woman’s home–and threatening to “break every bone” in her neck–while he was visiting in Tennessee, has resigned from the NYPD.

According to an NYPD statement, Reynolds “will receive no pension or health benefits, nor will he be allowed to carry a firearm.”

In July 2018, Officer Michael Reynolds, 26, unlawfully broke into the home of Conese Halliburton and terrorized her and her family in an apparent booze-fueled racist rant repeatedly calling her the N-word. Reynolds was captured on a neighbor’s Ring security camera threatening her saying, “I’ll [expletive] break every bone in your [expletive] neck.” He then reportedly said, “fucking niggers.

Halliburton’s dogs, and her two sons, kept Officer Reynolds from physically attacking her. Reportedly, Reynolds only left when Halliburton told him she had called local police.

Two other NYPD officers–who remain unidentified–were with Officer Reynolds in Nashville where they were to attend a bachelor party for Reynolds’ best friend Thomas Geberth. According to Ms. Halliburton, when she confronted Reynolds the next day with the other two officers present she was told by Geberth “We are police from New York. You don’t need to make a big deal about it. We were just drinking.”

These two unidentified officers will apparently avoid disciplinary action.

Last month, Reynolds pled no contest and was sentenced to 15 days in jail and three years’ probation on one count of aggravated criminal trespassing and three counts of assault. The judge who sentenced Officer Reynolds was apparently sickened by his behavior and said he doubted the sincerity of Reynolds’ apology in court.

“I’m not sure what might have happened had she (Halliburton) not been on the phone with police,” Judge Fishburn said. “The main thing is this not be swept under the rug. The kind of conduct that occurred that night just cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. If I were to grant him judicial diversion I would be granting him immunity.

Judge Fishman also said, “I’m going to leave the state of affairs of his job up to the city of New York.”

Earlier today, New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, at a protest rally, had called for Reynolds to be fired.

Public Advocate Williams said, “Hate crime or not there was a crime that occurred, and we could all agree on this: that crime should mean that you are no longer a member of the NYPD.”

Ms. Halliburton had also called for the firing of Reynolds.

Her attorney, Daniel Horwitz, told NBC News on Wednesday, “Michael Reynolds is a violent and dangerous racist who has no business carrying either a badge or a gun. Ms. Halliburton wants the NYPD to fire him immediately so that he can’t hurt anyone else, and we are all frankly dumbfounded that that has not happened already.”

During today’s protest, Mayor Bill de Blasio was also singled out for criticism.

Rev. Johnny Green, of the social justice group “Impact” said: “It is my considered opinion that Mayor de Blasio has become the biggest threat to his own police department. Because his inactions on this matter, I think, put good police officers at risk.”
