On Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 2:30 PM, there will be a press conference to demand a federal investigator to solve the string of murders of seniors at Carter G. Woodson NYCHA senior housing development.

Council Member Inez Barron and Assembly Member Charles Barron will be joined by the family of the recent victim, Ms. Cabarello, other elected officials and community leaders.

There were four suspicious deaths including three confirmed homicides of senior citizens in the Carter G. Woodson senior citizen building in recent years. Myrtle McKenny, 82, was stabbed to death in December of 2015. Jacolia James, 83 was found violently beaten to death in April of 2019. Mr. Hector Higgins in his 80s was found dead with bruises in 2019. This past Friday Jan 15, 2021, 78-year-old Juanita Cabarello was discovered dead by her son in the hallway of her sixth floor apartment with a cord wrapped around her neck.

It is important to note that Ms. McKenny’s stabbing case in 2015 was originally ruled a natural cause of death by the coroners office until the funeral home noticed puncture wounds in her neck and body. The coroner’s office reevaluated the case and confirmed it was indeed a homicide. Considering that deaths of the senior citizens may not be getting the proper evaluations, and the NYPD has failed to solve any of the crimes, a federal investigator is being demanded.

The press conference will follow a meeting with the Carter G Woodson Resident Association, NYCHA management, NYPD and the Office of the Mayor. The matter of getting NYCHA to expedite the installation of security cameras and other matters will be discussed and reported at the press conference.
