AG’s Civil Rights Forum

Two hundred and twenty five people attended the Civil Rights forum. The event was the third in a series of forums that the Attorney General is doing statewide. The next one is schedule for the city of Rochester.

On August 7, 2007, the Office of New York State Attorney General, Andrew M. Cuomo, held its third Civil Rights forum in Harlem at the Adam Clayton Powell State Building.

The discussion, led by lawyers from the Office of the Attorney General and with an attendance of 225 people, focused on issues of discrimination in housing and employment; predatory lending; as well as consumer’s and immigrant’s rights.

Regarding immigration services fraud, Harlem residents were informed about how immigration fraud is committed, possible remedies and resources available for victims and commonsense advice for immigrants seeking to avoid scams.
The conversation was followed by a question and answer session where community members got an opportunity to voice their concerns and receive some legal opinions from the OAG representatives.

The entire event was simultaneously translated into Spanish and Sign Language. This initiative is part of the Attorney General’s ongoing effort to address the broad range of issues affecting the New York State community.
Sessions have also been held in Syracuse, Buffalo and New York City. The next Civil Rights forum is schedule for the city of Rochester on August 22.
