New York, NY June 24, 2019 – Building Skills New York, a non-profit that connects underserved New Yorkers with good-paying jobs at local construction sites, announced today that it has secured nearly 150 job placements since the start of 2019.

This represents an increase of more than 70% over the number of placements secured during the first half of last year.

BSNY’s growing number of worker placements is largely attributed to a more robust worker pipeline, driven by strong referrals from workforce development partners and BSNY’s increasingly efficient jobseeker intake process. Improved efficiency in referrals, worker screening and intake has resulted in a rising jobseeker acceptance rate – up 66% compared to 51% in 2018. Since the beginning of 2019, BSNY has added nearly 500 job candidates to its worker pipeline, all of whom have either been placed in or are in the process of being placed in local construction jobs.

“Building Skills is opening new doors that help New Yorkers find real career paths in the construction industry,” said David Meade, executive director of Building Skills NY. “At Building Skills, we want to help ensures that the jobs created through local construction programs are actually going to workers who live in those communities.”

Building Skills is dedicated to providing construction jobs and trainings to typically underemployed, minority New Yorkers. So far, in 2019, 96 percent of workers placed by BSNY identify as Black (78 percent) or Latino (18 percent). These placements and trainings help New Yorkers revitalize their neighborhoods and get on a path to long-term success for themselves and their families.
