“We do it for love.”
Chicago Stepping or “Steppin,” as it is affectionately called, is a dance indigenous to Chicago. It is unique in that the style and demeanor of the era and city in which it was created directly influence Stepping. It’s a very smooth form of dancing, but it’s also a way of life with Steppin’ events, clothes, music, and even attitude. If Hustle, Salsa, Hand Dance, Bop, you can learn Chicago Stepping. The dance consists of two or more people dancing as partners in synch to a 6 or 8 count beat to musical sounds like Jazz, Soul, Funk, R&B, Old-School, Neo Soul, Rap, or Hip Hop.
In 2002, R. Kelly released Step in the Name of Love to the world. That song followed by Happy People created a craze for Stepping. R. Kelly put Chicago Stepping on the map with those songs, and the Happy People album dedicated to Chicago Stepping. Now, Stepping has gained popularity at a very rapid pace, manifesting in many major cities like: Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, Houston, the Carolinas, Milwaukee, L.A., Oakland, Arizona, Seattle, D.C., Baltimore, Virginia, Philly, and now New York.
