Jonathan P. Hicks has died of pancreatic cancer, his wife, Christy DeBoe Hicks, announced.

Hicks was a reporter at The New York Times and later a New York Amsterdam News columnist.

Hicks was a senior fellow at the DuBois Bunche Center for Public Policy at Medgar Evers College, in addition to his AMNEWS column.

Hicks was 58 years old.

In a statement, the Public Advocate Letitia James said:  “I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of journalist Jonathan Hicks. Jonathan’s long and distinguished career spanned work with the New York Amsterdam News, Black Entertainment Television, and almost a quarter century with The New York Times. His influence can be found in his writing, specifically his political coverage, which spanned three city administrations. Today, New York lost a great voice in journalism.”
