Donald Trump, like his buddy Russian President Vladimir Putin, is now trying to hold on to power by calling for the November election to be “delayed.”

Widespread disagreement and ridicule at Donald Trump’s Thursday morning suggestion that the November election should be “delayed” is coming in from both sides of America’s political divide.

In a tweet, Trump said, “With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most inaccurate & fraudulent Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???”

No president has the authority to delay an election. Only Congress can do this–and it would require a change in federal law.

In response to Trump’s statement, Jamaal Bowman, the Democratic nominee and likely next member of Congress in NY-16, released the following statement:

“Trump likes to think of himself as a strongman, but these are the words of a weak leader who’s terrified that he’s going to lose. These are the words of a fascist who will do anything in his power to steal, rig, or delay this election indefinitely. He will do anything to stay in power for 4 more years, so he can continue to drive this country down the road of plutocracy and authoritarianism.

“I know what the polls say, but this is not a moment to rest or take anything for granted. Everyone in this country needs to mobilize every fiber of their being to organize against Trump, and his dangerous brand of authoritarianism. We need to not only vote against Trump and to take back Congress, but to organize at every level to move our country forward and ensure that we never elect anyone like him ever again.

“He’s a disgrace, an embarrassment, and manifestly unfit for office, and too many cowards in his party will do nothing to stop him. It’s up to us. Nothing will change unless we all are consistently involved. If we really want change for the better, we have to get in the game – and stay in the game. We need a sense of urgency, not just among those who normally follow elections, but among every single American. That is how we make change.”

Trump’s tweet comes on the same day that voting rights and Civil Rights champion Rep. John Lewis was laid to rest.
