Louis Reyes Rivera

[African Liberation Month]

Pan African Tribute to Cultural Champions

During our African Liberation Month of May we will pay special tribute to two of Brooklyn’s tremendous treasures; Fela Barclift, Director of the
Little Sun People and the late Louis Reyes Rivera, Brooklyn’s Poet Laureate and cultural warrior.

A Pan African Tribute will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 7 PM at Sistas’ Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue (corner of Jefferson Avenue), Brooklyn NY.

Mama Fela Barclift, an African mother of four children and life long Bedford-Stuyvesant resident, founded the Little Sun People Inc. early education program in 1980.  Fela began the program in her home because she wanted to care for her own young daughter. Fela redesigned one floor of her Bedford-Stuyvesant brownstone and began to advertise her small, in-home family day care program.

It didn’t take very long for Fela to discover that she had found her life’s work. She founded a Pan African educational institution that influences generations.

Bedford Stuyvesant lost a extraordinary educator, historian, writer with the passing of Louis Reyes Rivera; Brooklyn’s Poet Laureate.  Steeped in a Pan-African outlook and dedicated to teaching those around him, Louis made numerous literary contributions. Despite earning many accolades, he was always approachable. The winner of many literary awards came to be known as “The People’s Poet” through his embrace
of issues of everyday folks.

Celebrate African Liberation Month honoring Africans who give and gave so much to teach us our culture. Don’t miss this very special tribute.
