Congressmember Jerry Nadler endorsed Comptroller Scott Stringer for Mayor of New York City

Today, Congressmember Jerry Nadler (above left) endorsed Comptroller Scott Stringer for Mayor of New York City alongside Assemblymember Dick Gottfried who joined Congressmember Nadler, Senator Jackson and Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal in a growing West Side coalition supporting Comptroller Stringer’s campaign.

Congressmember Nadler and the coalition of leaders hailed Stringer’s progressive record representing the Upper West Side for 13 years in the Assembly, and then as Manhattan Borough President and City Comptroller, and they touted his ability to work with the State Legislature to advance New York City’s agenda in Albany.

Congressmember Nadler said: “Scott Stringer is a longtime champion for the West Side – from his days as a young reformer in the Assembly to his bold leadership as Manhattan Borough President to his groundbreaking work as Comptroller – he has always been there for us. From the moment I first met Scott, he’s never been afraid to take on the status quo and rewrite the rules – literally – to give New Yorkers the representation they deserve. I know that Scott is a man of integrity, he’s a New Yorker to his core, and he will bring real progressive change as Mayor. I’m proud to endorse him, and I urge my neighbors on the West Side and across the city to send Scott Stringer to City Hall.”

Comptroller Scott Stringer said: “Jerry Nadler is a tenacious and fearless champion for justice and progressive values. Jerry’s not just a mentor for me, he’s an example for all public servants. He’s admired on the Upper West Side and across the country for his integrity and principled leadership, and I’m lucky to have him by my side in every challenge. There’s no better partner to have in this campaign than Jerry Nadler, and I can’t wait to continue the fight for our shared progressive values at City Hall.”

Assemblymember Dick Gottfried said: “Comptroller Stringer is a fighter for the West Side and he’s the progressive leader our City needs. Scott has always represented this community with integrity, including 13 years in the State Assembly where he rewrote the rules and took on the status quo. Comptroller Stringer knows his way around Albany and he will work well with the Legislature in advancing New York City’s agenda. I’m proud to endorse Scott’s campaign, and I look forward to working with him at City Hall for all New Yorkers.”

Comptroller Scott Stringer said: “Assemblymember Gottfried is a tireless public servant who leads on the big issues and always stands up for what he believes. I’m proud to have Dick’s support, and I look forward to partnering with him, Senator Jackson, Assemblymember Rosenthal, and our growing coalition to build a city for everyone.”

Senator Robert Jackson said: “When it comes to choosing our next Mayor, one of the most important issues to me is our public schools. And no candidate has demonstrated a stronger commitment to public education than Scott Stringer. He’ll be a Mayor who’s fully engaged in the decisions, big and small, that will shape the futures of NYC’s 1.1 million school children. And as a public school parent Scott now has a personal stake too. I’m proud to stand with Scott and endorse him to be New York City’s next Mayor.”

Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal said: “From his days in the New York State Assembly, when he held the seat I now occupy, Scott Stringer has shown himself to be a bold leader, a change maker and an indefatigable voice for vulnerable people, both in Albany and in the community. I had big shoes to fill when I succeeded Scott to represent the Upper West Side in the New York State Assembly. Scott set the standard of exemplary constituent services: no problem too great or issue too small, he fought for everyone. This is the type of service he will bring to every New Yorker and exactly what Scott Stringer will bring as Mayor of the City of New York. From his unwavering support for tenants, and his early advocacy for survivors of domestic violence, to his demand for and adherence to transparent and more accountable government, Scott has led the way. Scott Stringer is exactly who we need as our next Mayor, and I am proud to endorse him.”

Comptroller Stringer’s campaign has been endorsed by several prominent leaders who represent the vanguard of New York City’s progressive movement.

Scott Stringer grew up in Washington Heights in the 1970s. He attended P.S. 152 on Nagle Avenue and I.S. 52 on Academy Street. He graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in Marble Hill and John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan, a CUNY school. Stringer was elected City Comptroller in 2013. Prior to serving as Comptroller, he was Manhattan Borough President from 2006 to 2013 and represented the Upper West Side in the New York State Assembly from 1993 to 2005.
