Public advocate and mayoral contender de Blasio
[NYC Mayoral Election 2013]
Leading mayoral contender Bill de Blasio today slammed Mayor Michael Bloomberg's announcement that he'll appeal U.S. District Court Judge Shira A. Scheindlin's ruling this week that Stop-and-Frisk is unconstitutional.
"The overuse and abuse of stop and frisk is driving police and communities apart instead of making our city safer. Mayor Bloomberg's decision to appeal the federal court's ruling is wrong and deeply misguided," de Blasio said, in a statement.
"I'm the only candidate committed to appointing a new police commissioner, creating an independent Inspector General (IG) for the NYPD, and passing a ban on racial profiling. According to the latest Quinnipiac Poll, de Blasio, with 30 points, has surged in the lead, followed by Christine Quinn at 24% and Bill Thompson, at 22%.
The two leading candidates after the primary head to a runoff before confronting the Republican challenger.
