Inez Barron, the fearless New York City Councilmember doesn’t believe only White guys should have all the fun — she’s running for the Speaker’s post.

Although other candidates of color had previously declared their candidacy prior to Councilmember Barron, not one had unequivocally affirmed that he would remain as a candidate for Speaker when the actual voting occurs at the first stated meeting on January 3, 2018. Each of the other candidates was willing to accept other assignments, in lieu of the Speakership.

Barron indicated that she has the unwavering determination, intestinal fortitude and single-mindedness of purpose to be the candidate to become the first Black Speaker of the New York City Council. Barron announced that hers will be a campaign for “dignity and self-respect” as she encourages her colleagues to make history and vote for her to become the first Black Speaker. “It’s our turn now,” Barron, said reminding the audience that there have been White men, a White woman, a Latina woman, never a Black speaker.

Barron announced her insurgent candidacy on Tuesday, December 26, at the historic House of the Lord Church, Brooklyn, in the presence of over 100 enthusiastic, highly-spirited community residents, advocates and human rights activists. Her announcement was received with a thunderous standing ovation.

The event was co-hosted by Assemblymember Charles Barron and Chair of the December 12th Movement, Viola Plummer. It was planned as a Unity rally for the first day of Kwanzaa–Umoja.

Barron’s experience in leadership and legislative roles includes having been a teacher trainer, a district early childhood coordinator, an assistant principal, an elementary school principal, the executive assistant to the Community School Superintendent –all within the NYC Department of Education– and nine years as a legislator in the New York State Assembly and the New York City Council.

She is presently the NYC Council Chair of the Committee on Higher Education and Co-Vice Chair of the New York City Council Black, Latino and Asian Caucus.

She holds a B.A in Physiology and an M.A. in Reading/Special Education.

Call your City Councilmember and tell them to vote for Inez Barron.
