Adem Bunkeddeko, the progressive Democrat running for Congress in NY-9, outraised the incumbent Rep. Yvette Clarke and all other candidates in the last campaign finance report before the Primary Election on June 23rd.

As concerns mount about the viability of right-wing homophobe Chaim Deutsch, Bunkeddeko’s strong fundraising gives him the resources needed to win.

Bunkeddeko raised $117,934 from individual donors, compared to the incumbent’s $76,938, much of which came from corporate PACs. Deutsch raised $55,784. Other candidates in the race failed to raise more than $10,000 in this filing.

“Folks in this district know that they deserve better than a do-nothing incumbent or a right-wing homophobe intent on creating more division and distrust in our community. That’s why my campaign is in the strongest position to bring NY-9 the progressive champion we need,” said Bunkeddeko. “We have grassroots support from thousands of individuals who know that Rep. Clarke has failed our district and we need new leadership to address the challenges facing our community, from police brutality to housing insecurity to segregated schools. We deserve a progressive leader who truly represents our values and can get the job done.”

With 11 days to go, Bunkeddeko’s campaign has mobilized over 100 volunteers and progressive organizations to expand voter outreach efforts. Additionally, Bunkeddeko has continued to build a coalition of community leaders, progressive organizations, labor, and activists, including UAW Region 9A, anti-corruption activist Zephyr Teachout, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, the Arena PAC, Empire State Indivisible, LAMBDA Independent Democrats, Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, Leadership Now, and NYPAN.

Adem Bunkeddeko is an organizer and advocate in Central Brooklyn running for Congress in NY-9. He previously challenged incumbent Yvette Clarke in 2018, losing by less than two thousand votes. Through a career in public service, Bunkeddeko has tried to pay forward the sacrifices his family made to flee civil war in Uganda to start a life in America. He previously served on Brooklyn Community Board #8 where the people of his neighborhood have been turning for help because their elected representatives have neglected the affordable housing crisis.
