Sheldon Silver should step down from his role as Assembly Speaker.

The allegations against him represent a massive breach of the public trust and impair his ability to claim a leadership role in New York State. He should also immediately hold a press conference and answer all public questions about the allegations. And if he did in fact receive millions in bribes and kickbacks, he should resign from public office altogether.

But it is not only Sheldon Silver who must respond publicly and immediately to today’s news. Reports indicate that the charges brought against Sheldon Silver were also looked into by the Moreland Commission, which Andrew Cuomo prematurely ended after it got too close to his donors and supporters.

The Governor should revive the Commission and allow it to perform its work without interference from him or his office.
