Working Families Party Director Says Tiffany Cabán’s Probable Upset Win In Queens District Attorney Primary Race Has Turned Queens “Upside Down”

Working Families Party Director lauds Tiffany Caban's probable win--which isn't definitively confirmed with 3,000 ballots still to be counted...

In response to Tiffany Caban's election as Queens District Attorney, New York Working Families Party Director Bill Lipton said:

"Tonight, Queens is turned upside down. Giants fall and empires crumble. Tiffany Caban has defeated the field and won the Democratic Primary for Queens District Attorney. By running, Tiffany changed the narrative. As District Attorney, she'll change thousands of people's lives.

"We have a criminal justice system that lets the rich off easy and cracks down hard on poor people, people of color and immigrants. But there has been a sea change in America on the politics of criminal justice. Tonight is more proof that the era of chest-beating 'tough on crime' is over. The era of a criminal justice system that sees success as locking up as many undesirables as possible is over. The era of mass incarceration is over.

"Tonight's victory is most of all a victory for the humanity of those at the margins of society that have been criminalized and incarcerated for no good reason. This is a victory for people who want to see a criminal justice system with justice and safety for all."

The WFP provided strategic support to the Caban campaign. It recruited and paid for Caban's campaign manager, and helped recruit and pay for nearly a dozen other staff, as well as key consultants. The WFP also recruited national, state, and local elected leaders to support Tiffany's candidacy, and designed and paid for seven pieces of mail, a cable TV buy, and ads on informational kiosks. In total, the WFP spent $250,000 in support of Caban's candidacy.

The Working Families Party is an independent political organization that recruits, trains, and elects the next generation of progressive leaders to office. The Working Families Party endorsement is a “seal of approval” for progressive voters.

This year the WFP has driven a progressive wave in local elections across America. The WFP helped elect longtime tenants organizer and progressive champion Jumaane Williams as Public Advocate in New York City, swelled the ranks of Chicago city council progressive caucus, put public education champions on the school board in Milwaukee, helped make Stephen Mason the first Black mayor of Cedar Hill, Texas, helped insurgent Latinx LGBTQ social worker Candi CdeBaca oust a longtime incumbent on the Denver City Council, and elected other council members from Morgantown, W.Va., to Dallas.

Last year the WFP flipped state senate chambers in New York and Colorado, defeated big-spending political establishments in Maryland and Milwaukee, and helped Tony Evers and WFP National Committee member Mandela Barnes oust Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.
