Riders Alliance Campaign Manager Stephanie Burgos-Veras: “Governor Cuomo needs to raise the stakes, think bigger, and act bolder. There’s a lot more than a new bus map riding on the Bronx redesign. Bigger network changes in Queens and Brooklyn are soon to come. And with congestion pricing on the horizon, riders need the governor’s strong leadership to make major improvements to Bronx buses now.”

Today, the Riders Alliance released a statement on Governor Cuomo’s Final Draft of the MTA Bronx Bus Network Redesign.

Riders Alliance Campaign Manager Stephanie Burgos-Veras said:

Governor Cuomo needs to deliver more for Bronx bus riders in the MTA’s once-in-a-lifetime network redesign. Changing stop spacing to keep buses moving is an important step in the right direction. We encourage all Bronx elected leaders to support that. But riders still need much greater bus service frequency, better-optimized routes, and more new routes to emerging job centers like Hunts Point and LaGuardia Airport.

“The Bronx relies more on buses than any other borough. Bronx riders are overwhelmingly low-income New Yorkers of color. Better buses can be engines of opportunity. Staten Island got $10 million for 40,000 middle-class riders. The state needs to invest much more in the 650,000 Bronxites who depend on buses to get to work, school, and other appointments — and to succeed in our city.

“In short, Governor Cuomo needs to raise the stakes, think bigger, and act bolder. There’s a lot more than a new bus map riding on the Bronx redesign. Bigger network changes in Queens and Brooklyn are soon to come. And with congestion pricing on the horizon, riders need the governor’s strong leadership to make major improvements to Bronx buses now.”

The Riders Alliance is part of the Bus Turnaround Coalition, which also includes TransitCenter, the NYPIRG Straphangers Campaign, and the Tri-State Transportation Campaign. The Bus Turnaround Coalition advocates for better, faster, more reliable local bus service throughout New York City.
