(3) THE UNITED NATIONS–-Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today issued an urgent call to the international community to assist Haiti following yesterday’s catastrophic earthquake that has devastated the impoverished Caribbean nation’s capital.

Buildings and infrastructure in Port-au-Prince suffered extensive damage, while basic services, including water and electricity are near the brink of collapse. The full extent of casualties, which could number in the hundreds, is still unknown, Mr. Ban told reporters in New York.

“There is no doubt that we are facing a major humanitarian emergency and that a major relief effort will be required,” he said.

Expressing gratitude to nations rushing aid to the earthquake’s victims, he called for the world to “come to Haiti’s aid in this hour of need.”

The UN, he said, is also mobilizing an emergency response team to help coordinate humanitarian relief efforts and is expected to be on the ground shortly.

Many of UN personnel serving in the country – including Hédi Annabi, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative – are still accounted for, Mr. Ban said, with the UN Headquarters in the Christopher Hotel having collapsed in the tremors.

“Many people are still trapped inside,” the Secretary-General – who has been in close consultation with the Governments of Haiti, the United States and others – noted.

Troops, mostly from Brazil, serving with the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) have been working through the night to reach those trapped under the rubble, and several badly injured people have been rescued and transported to the mission’s logistics base which remains intact.

Alain Le Roy, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping, told journalists today that fewer than 10 UN staff were pulled out of the collapsed Christopher Hotel, with some of them confirmed to have died.

Other UN offices have been damaged, and 10 people are missing from a compound housing people working for the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the World Food Programme (WFP), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and others.

The Secretary-General announced today that he will dispatch Edmond Mulet, his former Special Representative to Haiti and current Assistant-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, to the country, and that the UN Central Emergency Relief Fund (CERF) is releasing $10 million immediately.

“The first priority is search and rescue,” with teams from the US, China, France, the Dominican Republic and other nations on their way to Haiti, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes told reporters today.

The UN, he said, will launch a flash appeal to kickstart what “will certainly be a major operation and a major relief effort.”

MINUSTAH was set up in 2004 and currently has more than 9,000 military and police personnel and nearly 2,000 civilian staff. Some 3,000 of the mission’s troops and police are in and around Port-au-Prince, and will help to maintain order and assist in relief efforts. They have also started to clear some of the capital’s main roads to allow aid and rescuers to reach those in need.

The Security Council observed a moment of silence this morning, and the Secretary-General is slated to brief the General Assembly later this afternoon on the situation on the ground in Haiti.

(4) Statement from New York City, Comptroller John C. Liu stated the following in response to questions about New York City’s response to the disaster in Haiti:

“Thoughts and prayers are with those who are injured, who are displaced, who have lost loved ones in this quake, including fellow New Yorkers who have family in Haiti. The devastation is truly unthinkable, the losses unspeakable. A catastrophe of such proportions transcends geographic divides, and calls for unity toward humanitarian aid and compassion. No matter where in the world the emergency or disaster, New Yorkers time and again have banded together to help with relief efforts in any way possible, bringing forth the common humanity in all of us. I want to thank Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Paterson for getting everybody together on such short notice and organizing efforts on behalf of all New Yorkers.”

(6) Statement By New York State Senator John Sampson:

As more information trickles out of Haiti in the aftermath of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck this Caribbean island of just over 9 million people last Tuesday the situation is becoming more dire – literally by the minute. Just 24 hours after the first reports of the devastation became public Haiti’s Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said that “well over 100,000 people are feared dead” and the toll is projected to rise to as much as 500,000.

“This is a human catastrophe of enormous proportions. While the Caribbean is not exactly a hot zone for earthquakes they are not unheard of in this region that is noted more for seasonal hurricanes than earthquakes. Tuesday’s earthquake was one of the largest ever to hit the area — the last time an earthquake this strong struck Haiti was in the 18th century. This earthquake will likely have a much greater casualty toll because it hit a more densely populated region,” Senator Sampson said.

Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department has set up a telephone number for Americans seeking information about family members in Haiti. The toll-free number to call for information about family members in Haiti is 1-888-407-4747. The State Department advises that some callers may receive a recording because of heavy volume of calls.

(7) New York City Councilmember Charles Barron wishes to express his deepest condolences to the people of Haiti and to the families affected by the recent earthquake. It was reported that  the earthquake struck at 4:53PM EST on January 12, 2010.  The epicenter was just 10 miles southwest of the Capital of Haiti,  Port-au-Prince. The earthquake has caused mass destruction throughout the impoverished island nation. As  a result of this earthquake it has been reported that
the  loss of life is expected to be devastating.

Councilmember Barron will be working closely with Councilmember Matthew Eugene,  Assemblywoman Inez Barron, and the December 12th  Movement and other grassroots organizations to formulate a plan to assist in the relief efforts that are underway.

Barron States: ” The people of Haiti have suffered enough from the history of natural disasters and from the political exploitation of France and America. It is my prayers and hopes that the world unites and rescues the people of Haiti from this devastation and rebuild and restore Haiti to its once greatness. May God protect the people of Haiti.”

(8) My friend Stephanie’s in-laws are the pastors of this church in Haiti. As a family and with the help of volunteers, they have been doing alot of community work in Haiti. In addition to their ministry, they run a children’s home and a 200 bed hospital.
