More than 1,000 people gathered in a standing room only church to celebrate the presidential electoral victory of Barack Obama amid pageantry and musical display by a young belly dancing troupe and phenomenal African drummers.

The illustrious gathering was organized yesterday by The Committee to Eliminate Media Offensive to African People (CEMOTAP) as part of their 19th Annual Luncheon, at the Robert Johnson Family Life Center located in Saint Albans, Queens.

James C. McIntosh, M.D., and Betty Dopson, co-chairs of CEMOTAP, along with the rest of the group’s supporters and members paid tribute to Imhotep Gary Byrd, who was also the Master of Ceremonies, for his insight in putting what he calls, “the best political team on radio.” He was referring to the panelist that has been analyzing the elections on his show every week—they are Herb Boyd, author, educator and journalist; and Milton Allimadi, Publisher, Black Star News. Both were at hand to give their commentary about the election; Cash Michaels, the third member of the panel is a reporter for the Carolinas News, and conveyed his comments by audio presentation.

Also in attendance was newly elected Assemblywoman Inez Barron, and her husband the fiery City Councilman Charles Barron.

Alton Maddox, also known as “attorney at war,” was on hand and compared some past history to Obama’s win. He noted that Obama becomes the 44th president – and Jackie Robinson was the first Black Major League Baseball player and wore number 44.

Obama will be sworn in at the National Capital in D.C., on the stones laid by the ancestors when they were slaves.

The Village Drummers – drummed in the victory.
