Maybe Trump Says Things Romney Wants To Say
Republican
presidential candidate Mitt Romney while in Philadelphia recently
lamented the woeful conditions of U.S. public schools and said the
communities that suffered the most were ethnic minorities.
Presumably
he’s trying to reach out to Black voters as well. During the same week,
Romney’s team announced an upcoming campaign appearance with Newt
Gingrich, until recently a Republican also-contender and Donald Trump,
the New York businessman who inherited wealth, but not smarts, from his father.
Gingrich and Trump are the last people Romney wants to embrace if he’s serious about reaching level-headed Black voters and many Independents as well who repudiate race-baiting. Gingrich
famously referred to President Obama as the “welfare president.” It was
his desperate appeal to racists, including some in the Tea Party, who
have never forgiven voters for electing Barack Obama as the country’s
first Black president.
“Professor” Gingrich also said one way to instill discipline among Black youth is to have them work as janitors. Donald
Trump’s bigotry is well known. He infamously purchased full-page
advertisements in four major New York City daily newspapers in 1989
calling for the execution of five Black teenagers –as young as 14 years
old– who were accused of raping a White female investment banker in
Central Park.
Trump contributed to the lynch mob-hysteria that led to the
conviction of the boys. Years later, while serving long-sentences, the
boys were exonerated. Trump has never apologized or purchased similar
advertisements to say he was sorry.
More recently, he has been promoting the “birther” imbecility; that President Obama isn’t actually an American citizen. Once, when challenged about his racism he told an interviewer “I get along with the Blacks.”
The
best description of Donald Trump was actually offered today by the
conservative Republican columnist George Will on ABC News’ “This Week,”
program.
“I do not understand the cost benefit here,” George Will
said, referring to the planned Tuesday joint campaign appearance between
Romney and Trump; Will said voters wouldn’t take Romney seriously.
“The cost of appearing with this bloviating ignoramus is obvious it
seems to me.”
Will, referring to Trump added: “Donald Trump is
redundant evidence that if your net worth is high enough, your IQ can be
very low and you can still intrude into American politics. Again, I
don’t understand the benefit. What is Romney seeking?”
MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell has offered the best breakdown of how phony Trump really is.
Romney continues to stumble politically when reaching out to African Americans, which isn’t something new.
In
the 2008 election, he created one of the most preposterous photo-ops —
a pure classic. When he spotted a group of young African Americans
playing, he stopped and posed for a picture with them. He smiled stiffly
for the cameras and posed the question: “Who let the dogs out out?
Hoo-hoo!”
