Happily, Nappily Ever After

Sistahs Who Are Nappy, Brothas Who Are Happy

[Helese TALKS!]

I didn’t know what to expect when I walked into Autour du Monde, the restaurant where the most unique theme for a brunch I’d ever heard was being held: Brothas That Love Sistahs With Natural Hair, grammatical error aside, I was thrilled to attend this gathering of people celebrating just being themselves. For the last few weeks I’ve been on a kick of “stripping off masks” and I even started a Facebook Page called Make-Up Fast: No Make-Up Fast for 7 Days (please like the page, join the movement.)

I was greeted by the creator of the event, Jessyca Marshall, owner and creator of the natural hair care line Naturally Beautiful Haircare and distributor of the Nappyloctool. Her extensions Beautiful vendor’s tables were set up by  Natalie Sturgis, the event planner, who’s also a poet.

And along with the Naturally Beautiful Haircare table, the natural hair guru Oraje was there as well, and gave free consultations along with a fun lecture on the care and maintenance of natural, kinky hair.

We sistahs are learning to love our naps. And apparently the brothas are too, and after brunch was over, the event took a more fun, romantic turn. There was a dating game complete with bottles of wine for a prize
(woohoo!) and brothas from the audience were even asked to come up and express what they loved about seeing a woman with natural hair. This was more than just a commercial to sell natural hair products, this was an event that would bring together people who are turned on to the idea of keeping it real, especially if it means keeping it nappy.

And as for the food, and more about the venue, well, it’s not worth mentioning here. Hopefully it will be shut down by the time this article is published. My experience in that regard was appalling. I feel that they didn’t want me there, and most certainly wanted to ensure that I wouldn’t ever come back. This is the first –and I hope the last time– this event used this venue, but I still had a wonderful time. Just goes to show that you can be nappy and happy even when the service is really crappy!
