Iraq Crisis Benefits McCain

What better scenario for McCain’s political fortunes than to see conflict escalate in Iraq and tensions with Iran reach boiling point? After all, the Republican standard-bearer is clueless when it comes to the economy, which is the most pressing national issue at the moment

[Elections 2008: Manufacturing Conflicts]

Is the Bush Administration trying to manufacture new crisis in Iraq for the benefit of the Republican Presidential candidate Senator John McCain?

Why is the Administration suddenly escalating the conflict in the oil-rich city of Basra? The White House argues that it’s the Iraq army that’s independently taken the military initiative to end “lawlessness;” this in a country where lawlessness reigns supreme.

In any case, the Iraq army does not act independently of the U.S. military. Indeed, the U.S. has already been drawn in the new conflict, providing air support and bombardment.

What makes fighting in Basra even more dangerous is that it’s in Iran’s perceived sphere of influence; the Iranians will become more engaged, which is troubling for two reasons.

Recently, McCain showed his ignorance, or some would say his age, when he claimed Iran was training al-Qaeda, and sending them back to Iraq; several months ago, McCain also exposed his dangerous bias when he sang, “bomb Iran; bomb Iran; bomb Iran.”

What better scenario for McCain’s political fortunes than to see conflict escalate in Iraq and tensions with Iran reach boiling point?

After all, the Republican standard-bearer is clueless when it comes to the economy, which is the most pressing national issue at the moment, with the sub prime mortgage meltdown and the fear that there will be a run on the banks.

In the midst of full-fledged fighting between insurgents and the Iraqi and American forces, McCain would have a stronger argument that the country can’t withdraw in the middle of new crises.

No doubt, an Administration that concocted elaborate lies about WMDs to drag the nation into this war is very capable of such cynical political machinations.
