Racism And The New York Police Department

Lt. Davin used the N-word to address Black suspects, while Capt. Coan would tell the field team: "They are fucking animals. You make sure if you have to shoot, you shoot them in the head. That way there’s no story".

According to an article published by The Daily News on Monday, April 16, 2012, two top NYPD supervisors on the elite anti-gun unit continuously called Black suspects “fucking animals,” and instructed their subordinates to shoot them in the head.

The report also claims that the top supervisors gave their White suspects better treatment than they gave to their Black suspects. The explosive charges appear in depositions from three members of the firearms suppression unit: two current NYPD detectives and a retired first-grade detective.

Their testimony, which is part of a federal discrimination lawsuit, details how Capt. James Coan and Lt. Daniel Davin created a hostile environment for their Black detectives and suspected ethnic minority gun traffickers.

Lt. Davin used the N-word to address Black suspects, while Capt. Coan would tell the field team: “They are fucking animals. You make sure if you have to shoot, you shoot them in the head. That way there’s no story”.

These new claims come just weeks after the New York Police Department (NYPD) came under fire from both activists, and local elected officials for the astounding numbers of people, most of whom are ethnic minorities illegally stopped and frisked by the NYPD in 2011; a record high of 685,724.

Less than 6% of those who were stopped and frisked were actually arrested or given summonses for petty offenses such as jaywalking, noise pollution, open alcohol beverage containers, littering, tinted car windows and the possession of small amounts of pot.

With alarming claims like these and the overwhelming statistics to back them, it’s clear that there is something seriously wrong with the NYPD and it’s top officials.

When we look at situations such as these it’s apparent that the police are not serving and protecting the neighborhoods that they patrol. They’re harassing and discriminating against them instead.

It’s time for the U.S. Department of Justice to step in and investigate New York’s out of control police department.
