The Damn Yankees Sweep

-A +A

(Jeter & Co. They came, they saw, they conquered).

It hasn't happened in 63 years, and for the first time in the 21st century, the Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera led Yankees have authored a five game sweep—-against their most bitter rival, the Boston Redsox. And in Boston and in Fenway Park to boot. Damn Yankees.

The Yankees last performed a five game sweep over the Redsox back in 1951. But it hadn't been since 1943 that they performed the feat in bean town. The Yankees started the slaying with a Friday twilight doubleheader sweep. Reminded me of the great stickball legends from Madison Street in Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy at work. Billy "Bang Bang" Davis always used to say of the legendary, Mellie Mays, "Mellie loved a good slay."

“Bang, with Mellie, Fuzzy, Jimmy Donohue, St. Clair "Tee Fats" McCovey Braithwaite, Glenn Bartlett and Rich "Skull" Hazel, did a lot of slaying and all game sweeps in their day. The Yanks outscored Boston, 49-25 in the series. They won the high scoring games and they ended the sweep with the low scoring gem of the matches, 2-1. They came in 1 1/2 games up, left town 6 1/2 games up. Damn Yankees.

The season is not over but the fat lady can be heard humming. The Yanks won them all, the double figure games, 14-11 and the single digit ones, 8-5and 2-1. When Boston stayed single the Yankees played doubles winning 12-5 and 12-4. When the one game that went into extra innings did so, the Yankees took that too. Nine innings or extra innings they won. They pounded out 62 hits in the five games. Damn Yankees.

The Yankees played 19 hours and 45 minutes of total winning baseball. This from a team on a road trip that saw them playing 21 games in 20 days. Captain Derek Jeter gallantly led his troops. DJ made his run for league MVP evident to all those who both see and vote. A big hit in games two and four by the captain once again showed he leads by example. And the Yanks sweep of Boston validates, he leads men. A pretty special group at that. Think not? Ask the players and people of Boston. Damn Yankees.

ON THE BENCH: The season is not over but what a series to win and the manner in which it was done too... "The season is a marathon not a sprint, Rafael Palmero once told me. The Yanks though could be sprinting to the finish line for the division title. Trust*In*GOD*
