For quite some time, people have relied upon television news to tell them about the world—that is, at least, about everything that the news channel executives believe the public ought to know. As time goes on, however, people are becoming increasingly wary about what they are told on television.

In fact, according to a 2006 Roper Public Affairs and Media Poll, the majority of people surveyed don’t consider news outlets to be trustworthy. While PBS finished in the lead for the third year in a row, with 39 percent of respondents finding them to be trustworthy, only 26 percent trusted CNN and Fox News, 19 percent trusted CBS, and only 17 percent of the people trusted MSNBC news.

“It’s not surprising,” says Tom Lombardo, editor-in-chief of the online magazine To Think is Human ( “There is a major trend developing in the United States: thinking is coming back into style. People want the back-story behind the culture in which they live. There’s a ‘prove it’ trend on the rise.”

The online magazine, which has subscribers on three continents, was created for with those in mind that need somethin
g intellectually challenging in their inspirational mix. Subscribers to the weekly magazine read a selection of carefully chosen passages from books covering the history of mankind. Many people have a suspicious attitude about those from whom they receive information in the media. Going back to the source, through historical and current readings, people feel a greater connection and sense of truth.

“We give subscribers the background and insights they crave,” adds Lombardo. “We show them the variety of ways that literature, philosophy, and scripture – from all over the world – have contributed to human culture and brought us to where we are today.”
