For more than a decade, Buck used his birthday to help raise money and awareness for the NLBM. After the baseball icon passed away in 2006, the NLBM continued the tradition of celebrating his life!

Buck O'Neil was a first baseman in the Negro American League, one of several baseball leagues that comprised the Negro Leagues. O'Neil played primarily with the Kansas City Monarchs, from 1938 to 1949. Prior to this, he played briefly with the Memphis Red Sox in 1937. He played in three Negro League all-star games and in two Negro League World Series. In 1942, he won a championship with the Monarchs. After twelve seasons, he amassed a .288 batting average.
O'Neil is cited as the first African-American coach in Major League Baseball. In 2006, he was given a Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush.
