Pacquiao’s ‘Rotator Cuff’ Water Gate Scandal”

[BoxingGlove Notes]

The fight between Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Manny Pacquiao last Saturday, May 2, 2015 at the M.G.M. Grand Arena & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, was billed globally as the “fight of the century” surpassing, Joe Louis vs. Max Schmeiling #2 and Ali vs. Frazier #1, but, it never really lived up to the “hype”.

It was really a dull disappointing “boxing exhibition” by the ring master Mayweather and his “new” pupil, Manny Pacquiao, won, of course, by Mr. pound for pound, Mayweather.

After all of the money that was invested in this fight, plus stay-at-home fans paying $99.99 to watch it on pay-per-view, it was revealed that Manny Pacquiao was suffering from perhaps a career ending injury, and he still fought.

According to his post-fight admission he had injured his right shoulder 4 weeks ago in training camp while sparring, and he stopped sparring for 2 weeks.

An M.R.I. revealed that he suffered a rotator cuff tear on his right shoulder. Rotator cuff injuries suffered by major league pitchers are often career “enders”.

While in training camp, Pacquiao was permitted by the Nevada State Athletic Commission headed by Francisco Aguilar and U.S.A.D.A. The Anti-Doping Agency, to inject a medical pain-killer “Lidocaine” on his shoulder, but not allowed 2 hours before the fight, as they also requested.

No injury report was issued previously from Pacquiao or anyone in the Pacquiao camp, which included, trainer, Freddy Roach, Top Rank Promoter, Bob Arum or adviser, Michael Konez.

The injury was not reported perhaps out of fear of having to postpone this mega money fight that was expected to gross $600 million dollars, and both fighters were to share a $300 million dollar purse on a 60/40 split.

The lying continued when as per Boxing Commission policy the fighter has to fill out a questionnaire before the fight, swearing under oath and “under penalty of perjury”, that the information he provided is “honest and correct”.

Actually, Pacquiao lied twice:

1) “Have you had an M.R.I. or CT Scan on the head for any reason other than State Licensing”? Answer: “NO”.

2) “Have you had any injury to your Shoulders, Elbows, or Hands, that needed evaluation or examinations”? Answer: “NO”.

Just like Water Gate, everyone especially Michael Konez are protecting Pacquiao of total blame stating that he Konez- answered the questions falsely not Pacquiao.“I just made a mistake,” declared Mr. Konez.

The massive investigation conducted by Nevada State Athletic Commission Chairman, Francisco Aguilar and the Nevada State Attorney General, Adam Laxalt could result as reported, in the withholding of Pacquiao’s purse, and suspension of his boxer’s license.

Facing immediate surgery, Pacquiao will have to go through approximately 9 months of convalescence which includes physical therapy, and if he resumes his boxing career, it will not be until perhaps the year 2017.

When informed of Manny Pacquiao’s shoulder injury, a non-compassionate Floyd Mayweather stated, “I have fought with sore hands, sore arms, sore shoulders, and I ‘sucked it up’ and won”.

Floyd stated further, “You got to find a way to win if you want to win, I did, and that is why I am still undefeated”.

That statement was self-serving since Mayweather should remember that in his first pay-per-view fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, coming back from retirement, he requested and was granted a 6 weeks postponement because he had injured his rib cage in training.

Former Heavyweight Champion George Foreman, remembered that his “Rumble in the Jungle” battle with Mohammad Ali was postponed for a month because he suffered a cut eye.

“So much money was invested in that fight that we were detained almost in a “house arrest” fashion and not even allowed to leave the country to ensure that the fight was held when I recovered”, Foreman stated.

“In the Pacquiao and Mayweather fight there was so much money invested, I am glad it was not postponed,” Foreman further stated.

I am not a medical professional any more than Floyd Mayweather is but what he fails to understand is that when you “tear” a tendon, or a tissue in your body it has a crippling effect on your “normal” movements and you are in constant severe pain.

Lidocaine is only a temporary relief until needed surgery is performed.

I personally am not in favor of a re-match of this lackluster fight because Mayweather scored enough “clean” punches to win the close decision.

Mayweather’s constant holding, hitting below belt, elbowing, and leaning on Pacquiao, “tarnished” this fight but, the rotator cuff scandal could “force” a re-match due to the fact that Manny Pacquiao was only 50% of an expected 100% condition.

Although Mayweather did score the most points during the fight, Pacquiao was the harder hurting puncher although sporadic, throughout the entire 12 rounds due to his aching right shoulder.

Many predicted-myself included-that Manny Pacquiao would win this fight but he did lose legitimately, despite the injury.

The fans worldwide especially the Gamblers who favored Pacquiao a 4 to 1 underdog feel they were “cheated”.

“This was not an honest fight”, they claim, “we should all unite and sue everyone involved in the promotion of this farce”, they stated further.

It is very sad when the boxer is always the “sacrificial lamb”.

Injured Manny Pacquiao in perhaps the biggest fight of his career had to fight Floyd Mayweather at all cost.

In other sports like Baseball, Football, or Basketball, when the star player is injured there are several replacements for that position even when the star is gone for the season, and in a Broadway play we always have the “Understudy”.

The boxer never has a replacement although you see “Team Pacquiao” or a “Team Mayweather” approaching the ring.

When the bell rings all you see is Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao square off as they move towards each other and the teams are sitting down outside of the ring.

I am sadly reminded of Russian heavyweight, Magomed Abdusalamov who suffered a career ending brain blood clot injury that almost killed him.

He has somewhat “recovered” but remains almost in a vegetative state barely recognizing his own family, and of course “retired” from boxing.

Will this perjury charge effect the Political career of Senator Manny Pacquiao, and cause him to lose a re-election? I hope not.
