The return of ‘Son of God’ Andre Ward

After a pro-longed absence from the championship ring wars undefeated world champ and Olympian Gold Medalist, Andre Ward will fight this Saturday, August 6, 2016 against unknown Colombian W.B.C. Latino Super Middleweight Champ, Alexander Brand in Oakland California’s Oracle Arena.

Ward former 2 times world champ has been out of the ring for approximately 2 years due to severe injuries which caused postponements of his fights and also due to law suits filed against his previous promotional company.

When those problems were resolved, he signed a contract with Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports to help re-launch his undefeated boxing career, 29-0, 15 knockouts. Ward actually hasn’t lost a fight amateur nor professional since he started boxing at the young age of 12.

“It was great to get back into camp and shake the ring rust off, work on techniques, getting sharp to prepare for Brand who is a hard puncher with nothing to lose and a lot to gain. I know enough about him to take him very seriously”, stated, Ward.

Although he does not look past Brand the plan is to fight as many tune-up fights as possible so as to be prepared for his mega championship fight with reigning Light Heavyweight Champion, Sergey “The Krusher” Kovalev. It has been stated that this fight has a scheduled date for Saturday, November 19, 2016, according to Kathy Duva, C.E.O. of Main Events, Sergey Kovalev’s promoter. This fight will be on pay-per-view.

Alexander Brand, 39 years old, 25-1, 19 k.o.’s, has fought most of his professional fights in his native Colombia, scoring 12 straight knockouts and 15 of his first 17 fights. Brand’s only loss was to Badu “The Ripper” Jack in 2010 on an 8 round split decision that many felt he won.

Before he turned pro in 2009 at age 32, he amassed an enviable amateur record of, 437 fights, 427 victories, winning a variety of gold medals worldwide.

“I came here to the United States to take away Ward’s “0” that is why I have worked so hard in camp not only to beat him but also to make sure that I am the one fighting Kovalev, not Ward.”

Is it possible that Andre Ward is still so rusty from the ring absence that Brand could defeat him and spoil his Kovalev plans?

In his comeback fight against Cuban undefeated light heavyweight, Sullivan Barrera, 17-1, 12 knockouts, although Ward won a 12 round decision, he did exhibit some ring rust and some uncertainty even though he was able to score a flash knockdown in the 3rd round with a left hook.

According to Virgil Hunter, Andre Ward’s trainer, “Brand is a hard puncher and we don’t take him lightly because he is a dangerous bump on the road who could ruin Ward’s plans”.

As a kind gesture during the pre-fight Press Conference, Oakland’s Mayor Libby Schaaf, and staff member Penny Moore honored Andre Ward with an Official Proclamation declaring August 4, 2016, “Andre Ward Day” for his support to the West Oakland Boys and Girls Club Chapter.

Ward’s fistic ring date with Brand although he is the betting favorite still remains a mystery due to the fact that it takes athletes especially boxers a few “test” fights to really begin to feel at home after a long absence which included injuries that required surgery. Ward is still in my opinion rehabilitating.

Black Star News with some possible doubts expects Andre Ward to win by a hard earned 12 round decision, and keep his date with Kovalev unless Trainer Hunter decides he needs another tune-up.

Who wants to be a Fight Promoter with all of these promotional headaches?
