CHICAGO — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers stuck to the script and selected quarterback Jameis Winston with the No. 1 overall pick of the NFL draft on Thursday night.

Instead of shaking hands with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Winston was in his hometown of Bessemer, Ala., surrounded by family and friends when he was selected.

Pressure was on the Buccaneers to get it right with the first overall pick they were expected for months to use on Winston, the 26-1 former Florida State whose off-field character questions they had vetted extensively.

Bucs coach Lovie Smith and general manager Jason Licht spent the pre-draft process thoroughly investigating Winston, who was accused of sexual assault in 2013. He was cleared by both law enforcement in Tallahassee and by Florida State.
