With only 12 more regular season games to go, the Dallas Mavericks have already clinched a playoff spot, but they are on pace to have there very best season ever.

This statistical nirvana experienced in Head Coach Avery Johnson’s third season since signing on March 19, 2005 is only the cherry on top of this season’s potential strawberry sundae of a NBA finals finish.

Is this season just a fluke? No, Dallas has ever so quietly been tinkering with things to arrive at where they are today, possibly the next NBA powerhouse.  So it was no surprise when Coach Johnson became the fastest coach to win 50 games.

He has already won his 100th game as a coach during this season’s three double digit win streaks. It was also no surprise that the Dallas Mavericks were the sixth fastest National Basketball Association (NBA) team in NBA history to reach 50 wins in a season.

They have not lost a game in about five weeks! The Dallas Mavericks schedule of remaining games are with the LA Lakers, Golden State Warriors, Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics, Detroit Pistons, New York Knickerbockers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks, New Orleans Hornets and the Milwaukee Bucks.  With their current record of 51-9, it is very possible that they could win 60 games during the regular season.

What continues to be the true hallmark of Coach Johnson’s coaching style is his successful interaction and connection with his players and the community.  Even with his drive for excellence he never wavers in showing the players he cares about them on and off the court.

He has positively modeled his civic duty with his community involvement.  He also serves on the board for two Dallas area organizations—Project Turn Around and Hunger Busters.  Project Turn Around aims to address the social needs of urban youth and their families.  Hunger Busters’ goal is to bring freshly made meals to the hungry and homeless.

Avery Johnson is the little caboose that could finally get the Dallas Mavericks’ train over the hill into NBA wonderland.
