Black Cowgirls Inspire Youth, Break Stereotypes

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) – It is a thrilling and fast paced sport. To ride, you certainly should be focused. And fearless… well that goes without saying. For the thousands of fans who gathered at the Arizona Black Rodeo, they witnessed something special, Black Cowgirls in the spotlight.

“I’m barrel racing.” Thais Hathaway has been riding for more than 20 years. “In the respect that you can do anything you want to do, I grew up in the suburbs of San Jose California and when I was 20 years old I decided I wanted to be a Cowgirl and ride a horse and so I did that and here I am today and it’s been just a great blessing and just a good lesson for you for any age and it’s a great thing.”

Thais says her passion to ride began at an early age. “My aunt actually barrel raced and so that’s when I was a kid I would see it.” And Thais isn’t alone.
