[The Doc’s Diagnosis]

There is something about the Miami Dolphins that brings out the best in the New York Jets, not to mention it seems to also mean victory.

The winless Jets faced their renowned foes last Sunday needing a win to finally get into the win column in this 2007 football season. And like they have done in their last three meetings and their last four played at the Meadowlands against the Miami Dolphins, the Jets once again won in style.

Shaun Ellis recorded the first sack of the season for the New York Jets. Kerry Rhodes made this season’s first New York Jet interception and Jet quarterback Chad Pennington ran in his first rushing score helping to bring about a Jets 31-28 victory.

Don’t let the score fool you, the Jets had this thing sewed up early on and were coursing along up 31-13 with less than 12 minutes left in the game when they decided to go into that old famous late game, “Prevent defense.”

For those that don’t know, prevent defense usually prevents one team from winning while allowing the other team back into the football game. This was a proven fact, as the Jets held on to win 31-28. Like late mid-game and late game relief pitching in baseball, late game prevent defenses are in vogue but sometimes it backfires, however this time it didn’t.

Not only was it played on a hot September day, the Jets offense and special teams were sizzling hot. Leon Washington ran back a 98 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Jets almost pulled off a comeback win over the Baltimore Ravens last week in Baltimore.  They had full control of this game and both sides of the football. There was talk that with the Jets’ schedule, after four games, the club could have found themselves in a 0-4 hole. Well, Sunday’s victory has assured that won’t happen.

Like I mentioned a little luck in Baltimore and the Jets could be 2-1 instead of 1-2. And who knows what or whether the now infamous spying situation had an effect on  their opening day loss to the New England Patriots.

Speaking of the Patriots, Jets play the Buffalo Bills next week in Buffalo. New England topped the Buffalo Bills in Buffalo on Sunday to stay undefeated in both the league and in their division.

Did You Know That:  Laveranues Coles has caught a pass now in 64 straight games. Also Coles has 10 touchdown passes in 12 contests against the Miami Dolphins. The jets are 12-4-1 against the Dolphins in contests that are won by three points or less.  Jet favorite former flanker Wayne Chrebet was saluted at half time this past Sunday.  The Jets gave Crebet a rolex, watch, and two first-class-round-trip tickets for two wherever Continental Airlines flies as part of his special day gifts.
