Today, a broad coalition from New York City’s diverse African communities launched a new citywide initiative – Africans for Stringer – led by African faith leaders, organizers and activists supporting Scott Stringer for mayor.

Africans for Stringer will form local chapters across the City, beginning in the Bronx and will work to activate Africans in all five boroughs to come to the polls for Stringer in the June primary. Members of the coalition praised Stringer for his record of fighting for MWBEs, advancing reforms for small businesses, and championing worker rights and job protections for vulnerable immigrants.

Mohammad Mardah, President, Africans Help Desk said: “Scott Stringer is a champion for African communities – he fights for inclusion and fairness on every issue. From fighting for language access for immigrants to standing up for taxi drivers to get a fair shake, Scott believes in a New York that works for everyone, no matter where you come from. As our next mayor, I have no doubt he will work to build a city where everyone has a fair chance to make it.”

Adama Bah, Executive Director, Nene said: “When MWBEs needed a champion, Scott Stringer was always there as a powerful voice for fairness. When NYCHA needed a watchdog – Scott Stringer was always here as a fierce defender of tenants. Scott Stringer will always be there for the most vulnerable communities who make our city run. I’m proud to be organizing my African neighbors and get them to get behind Scott Stringer. He will be a voice for all New Yorkers.”

Imam Souleiman Konate, Masjid al- Aqsa and General Secretary of the Council of African Imams said: “Scott Stringer believes that in the wealthiest city in the richest nation on earth – no person should go hungry. He’s fought for food justice and he’s stood up for the rich diversity of New York City by leading the fight to serve halal meals in city schools. I know that with Scott Stringer as mayor, African communities will have a true ally at City Hall.”

Reverend Ernest Asare, President, Ghanaian Ministry Fellowship International said: “Housing is the root of economic mobility, and that’s why we need Scott Stringer at City Hall. He understands how important affordable housing is to building an equitable New York – a city where anyone from anywhere can climb the economic ladder. He will build affordable housing citywide and make sure all communities – including New York’s vibrant African community – gets a fair shot to succeed.”

Cyrille Njikeng, Community Organizer said: “Scott Stringer believes in a fair education system for all students – that means CUNY community colleges should be tuition-free as a baseline with the expansion of ASAP to all community college students. I know him from when I was student-body president at Lehman College and without hesitation he stood with us. It’s now time to stand with him, I’m proud to support Scott Stringer for mayor.”

Scott Stringer said: ”I am so honored to have the support of such esteemed members of New York City’s vibrant African community – faith leaders, community leaders, organizers, activists, business owners and more. Africans for Stringer’ is a grassroots, people-powered group of New Yorkers committed to this city and our shared future.
