Several Black Atlanta radio stations have formed “Black Radio United for the Vote.”

While the global pandemic has required social distancing, for some industries, Covid-19 has created more cohesion than ever before. Case in point, on July 23, Atlanta’s 10 Black radio stations will come together to educate listeners about voting and encourage them to register.

“Originally we wanted to be out in the communities that we serve to push this initiative,” said Terri Avery, director of branding and programming for Kiss 104.1 which is owned by Cox Media Group. “But of course because of Covid-19, we thought it best not to put our staff and others in that situation.”

Each of the stations will continue to play music, but in between songs, DJs will interview speakers about the importance of voting.

Avery said she and her counterparts at stations across the dial agreed, voter education is a priority, especially in light of the challenges voters reported during the primary election last month. Metro Atlanta made national headlines for long lines and extensive wait times that made it difficult to cast a ballot.

That experience, and the increased awareness of racial injustice, spurred managers at local radio stations to form Black Radio United for the Vote, Avery said.
