New York, NY – Social worker and community activist Manny De Los Santos Tuesday was elected State Assemblyman in District 72 (Washington Heights & Inwood), replacing former Assemblywoman Carmen De La Rosa, who has since been elected to the New York City Council, District 10.

“I am grateful and humbled by the trust of my community in electing me as their voice in the State Assembly. Throughout my life I have fought for the people of Washington Heights, Inwood, and Marble Hill and I will continue that work in Albany,” De Los Santos said.

Congress Member Adriano Espaillat said: “Manny De Los Santos is a lifelong resident of Upper Manhattan and has dedicated his life to serving our community. I look forward to working with him in his new capacity as State Assembly Member, and jointly addressing the issues that matter most for our constituents such as stopping gun violence, protecting tenants and preventing displacement, bringing more resources for our schools, supporting small businesses, and helping us recover from the pandemic.”

Carmen De La Rosa, City Council Member for District 10 and former Assembly Member for District 72, said: “Having served this community as Assembly Member for the last 5 years, I know Manny De Los Santos is a thoughtful leader who understands the impact of the legislative process to our neighborhoods. He will be a staunch advocate for every one of our residents, especially the most vulnerable, so I am honored to pass the baton and have him as a partner in government.”

Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine said, “I can’t think of a more qualified person to represent District 72 in the State Assembly, particularly in the unprecedented, challenging times that we are living. Manny De Los Santos will bring the innovative leadership, deep knowledge of local communities and proven record of community service that is needed to be effective in Albany. Upper Manhattan voters made a great choice.”

State Assembly Member Al Taylor (District 71) said: “Manny De Los Santos has forged a distinguished career in community service, working with the most vulnerable populations in Upper Manhattan. From local schools, to knocking door-to-door, he has made a tremendous contribution to improving people’s lives. I am glad that voters recognized his work and his promise. I look forward to working with Manny and I welcome him as a colleague in the State Assembly.”

Democratic nominee De Los Santos will complete the current State Assembly term and will run for reelection in the June 28th, 2022, Democratic primary.

Manny De Los Santos, MSW, is a former Community School Director with over 10 years of social work experience. He has served as President of Northern Manhattan Democrats For Change, the grassroots club of Northern Manhattan. He was elected District Leader in 2009 representing the 72nd Assembly District. Manny was later elected to serve as State Committeeman in 2016. He was recently selected by City and State as a 40 under 40 Rising Star.
