Ted Glick, a prominent progressive activist, organizer and writer and former U.S. Senate candidate who has spent his career working for peace and justice and fighting climate change, announced Thursday that he is going on a month-long, water-only fast to highlight the importance of defeating Donald Trump at the polls.

Starting on October 3, 2020, the 71-year-old activist will consume only water and a few vitamins until Election Day on November 3. He will stay in his home in Bloomfield, New Jersey for the duration of the fast. His aim is to encourage Americans who are still unsure about participating in the election, or whom to vote for, to realize just how critical it is that Trump be defeated.

“I’m doing this because if Trump were reelected, it would be a huge threat to the world’s already-disrupted ecosystems, communities of color, low-income people, and our struggling democracy,” Glick said. “I feel the need to do all I can to help generate the massive voter turnout essential to ensure that Trump and his accomplices are defeated. We’re in an urgent, all-on-the-line situation demanding an urgent, all-on-the-line response.”

In particular, he says progressives need to go all-out for Biden, and that beyond voting themselves, Biden voters need to join voter turnout efforts in the battleground states—Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Florida, Arizona, Nevada, Iowa, Georgia, and Texas.

A nationally known progressive and climate justice activist, Glick has led and participated in hundreds of actions. He is President of 350NJ/Rockland, served as the National Coordinator of the Independent Progressive Politics Network, and was National Campaign Coordinator of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network. He ran for the U.S. Senate in 2002 as the Green Party nominee for New Jersey.

Glick has engaged in long water-only fasts before. The first was for 40 days in the summer of 1972, to end the war in Vietnam. The second was for 42 days in the fall of 1992, in opposition to the planned government celebrations of the 500th anniversary of Columbus arriving in what is now the Americas. The third was for 25 days in 2007, to draw attention to the climate emergency.
