Today, former President Barack Obama endorsed Jamaal Bowman for Congress in New York’s 16th District, as part of his first round of endorsements for the 2020 cycle.

Bowman is a former middle school principal who defeated a 31-year incumbent in a stunning 15-point upset to become the Democratic nominee in NY-16, which includes parts of Westchester County and the Bronx.

“I’m proud to endorse this diverse and hopeful collection of thoughtful, empathetic, and highly qualified Democrats,” said President Obama. “Together, these candidates will help us redeem our country’s promise by sticking up for working-class people, restoring fairness and opportunity to our system, and fighting for the good of all Americans — not just those at the top. They make me optimistic not just about our party’s chances in November, but about our country’s future long after that. So if you’re in one of their districts or states, make sure you vote for them this fall. And if you can, vote early — by mail or in person.”

“Wow! To be endorsed by the first Black president means the world to me,” said Jamaal Bowman. “Obama’s candidacy and victory gave me hope that our country was moving in the right direction and that the political system could actually work for people like me. To be raised by a single mom in less than perfect circumstances, I never could’ve dreamed I’d someday run for Congress, win, and be honored to receive the support from someone like Barack Obama. This is a testament to how far our campaign and movement have come. Let’s keep organizing and moving forward, as there is so much work to do. In all sincerity, all I can say is: Thanks, Obama.”
