Rep. Clarke Vows to continue fighting Trump’s biased immigration policy in seeking sixth-term

Brooklyn Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke who is running for re-election vowed to continue fighting against Donald Trump’s biased immigration policies when she formally announced her re-election bid at a rally today.

Clarke was joined by dozens of supporters including other members of Congress and Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“I have always worked to be a congresswoman for all of us. It is an endeavor, which takes the utmost maturity, perseverance, and resiliency,” Clarke said. “Whether it is in our fight for more jobs, affordable housing, affordable healthcare, fair immigration policies or protecting seniors, I have listened to your concerns and made it clear that they won’t be ignored by our current administration, or by anyone intending to silence our voices. With so much at stake in this election, we cannot afford to just sit on the sidelines. We must continue to stand together as one in our fight for a better tomorrow.”

Héctor Figueroa, president of 32BJ SEIU, said: “For over a decade, Yvette Clarke has proven herself a staunch defender of the needs of working families in Brooklyn, which is why our members are proud to endorse her. In Congress, she has stood with TPS holders and all immigrants, and for racial justice, pushing hard against the White House’s anti-worker, anti-Black and anti-immigrant policies and rhetoric.”

The gathering was on the steps of the Brooklyn Museum–Clarke officially announced her campaign for re-election to the US Congress, and to continue representing the people of New York State’s 9th Congressional District. She is seeking a sixth-term.

“Congresswoman Yvette Clarke is a leader who knows us, and because she knows us she understands first-hand our issues, our concerns, and our dreams,” said City Council Majority Leader Laurie A. Combo, who introduced Clarke. “It’s not enough to just talk about the problems that confront our community. We need a leader who finds solutions and fights for us as our voice on Capitol Hill. Yvette Clarke has been our leader at home and in Washington for over 11 years, and she will continue to be our leader in our fight for fairness, equality and opportunity for all living in the 9th Congressional District and beyond. She will continue to make Brooklyn proud.”

“Yvette Clarke is a tried, tested and true member of our community,” said Assemblywoman Latrice Walker. “She won’t have to learn the job of Congresswoman, because she is already working hard every day on our behalf. As she has done for years, she will keep fighting with us for a better tomorrow for our children. From advocating for stronger to gun control to standing up for small businesses, her integrity, experience, and know-how are beyond measure, and these attributes will continue to serve her well as our leader, our voice, and our congresswoman.”

In addition to de Blasio, others at the rally were: Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, Congressman Jerry Nadler, State Senator Kevin Parker, Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte, Assemblyman Robert Carroll, Assemblyman Nick Perry, Assemblywoman Diana Richards, Assemblywoman Jo Anne Simon, Assemblyman Walter Mosley, Councilmember Brad Lander, Councilmember Alicka Samuel, District Leader Jacob Gold, District Leader Ari Kagan, District Leader Olanike Alabi, and Pastor Eddie Allyne – St. Gabriels Episcopal Church.

Others were, Debbie Almontaser – Yemeni American Merchants Association, Alison Hirsch – Executive VP SEIU 32BJ, Bishop Barbara Lucas –Agape Tabernacle International and many enthusiastic residents hailing from the 9th Congressional District.

Currently in her 11th year in the US Congress, Clarke represents the 9th Congressional District, which includes the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, Flatbush, Brownsville, East Flatbush, and Midwood, as well as, portions of Park Slope, Sheepshead Bay, Gerritsen Beach, Madison, Marine Park, Ocean Hill, Flatlands, and Windsor Terrace.

Primary day is on Tuesday, June 26th.
