The three men convicted of killing Ahmaud Arbery are now on trial on federal hate crimes charges.

In the second day of testimony Wednesday, it turned out that proving hate of Black people is a lot easier when there’s multiple records of the defendants using the n-word.

Travis McMichael, who pulled the trigger in the 2020 murder, texted that at work, “We used to walk around committing hate crimes all day.” He loved his job, he wrote, because “zero n—–rs work with me.

Arbery’s three killers were convicted in a trial that largely steered clear of racial issues. The new, federal trial is focusing not just on whether Arbery’s killers harbored racial animus, but whether racism fueled his murder, specifically.

McMichael, according to FBI testimony Wednesday, on numerous occasions advocated violence against Black people he believed were breaking the law.
